The inspiration for this painting was a seahorse and weedy sea dragon I saw in the Sydney Aquarium. The seaweed is stylized by using a technique I learned from the late Nicholas Simmons where you paint a shape with fluid acrylics, let it dry a bit then hit the area with a strong stream of water leaving just part of the acrylic paint. Messy but fun. After painting the seaweed and part of the seahorses this way, I switched to watercolor to finish the painting. Later I added more seaweed, seahorses and a pipe and trumpet fish with both liquid acrylics and watercolor.
