Description

This enclosed, paved patio interpreted in this watercolor painting was outside of San Gimignano, Italy. I loved the colorful stone and brick walls, potted red and white flowers, green plants and vines, and the variety of window treatments in this European courtyard. The drama is provided by the white, plaster staircase creating the alcove beneath, the strong shadows on the paved patio leading into an arched doorway and the shadowy figure looking down through the shuttered window above.
